A visual search advantage for illusory faces in objects

چکیده

Face detection is a priority of both the human and primate visual system. However, occasionally we misperceive faces in inanimate objects –– "face pareidolia". A key feature these 'false positives' that face perception occurs absence features typical real faces. Human are known to be located faster than search. Here used search paradigm test whether illusory share this advantage. Search times were for matched amongst (Experiment 1) diverse 2) distractors, however more efficient with or without an face. Importantly, result indicates processed quickly enough by brain confer advantage, suggesting engagement broadly-tuned mechanism facilitates rapid cluttered environments.

Irrelevant objects of expertise compete with faces during visual search.

Prior work suggests that nonface objects of expertise can interfere with the perception of faces when the two categories are alternately presented, suggesting competition for shared perceptual resources. Here, we ask whether task-irrelevant distractors from a category of expertise compete when faces are presented in a standard visual search task. Participants searched for a target (face or sofa...

A visual short-term memory advantage for faces.

What determines how much can be stored in visual short-term memory (VSTM)? Studies of VSTM have focused largely on stimulus-based properties such as the number or complexity of the items stored. Recent work also suggests that capacity is severely reduced for items within the same category. However, the importance for VSTM capacity of more qualitative differences in processing for different cate...

A visual short-term memory advantage for objects of expertise.

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) is limited, especially for complex objects. Its capacity, however, is greater for faces than for other objects; this advantage may stem from the holistic nature of face processing. If the holistic processing explains this advantage, object expertise--which also relies on holistic processing--should endow experts with a VSTM advantage. The authors compared VSTM fo...

Visual Search of Mooney Faces

Faces spontaneously capture attention. However, which special attributes of a face underlie this effect is unclear. To address this question, we investigate how gist information, specific visual properties and differing amounts of experience with faces affect the time required to detect a face. Three visual search experiments were conducted investigating the rapidness of human observers to dete...

Visual search for faces by race: A cross-race study

Using a single averaged face of each race previous study indicated that the detection of one other-race face among own-race faces background was faster than vice versa (Levin, 1996, 2000). However, employing a variable mapping of face pictures one recent report found preferential detection of own-race faces vs. other-race faces (Lipp et al., 2009). Using the well-controlled design and a heterog...
